The League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP), through its MOREFISH advocacy program for sustainable fishing practices, is inviting mayors of the country's coastal municipalities to the 2nd Conference of Coastal Municipalities (2CCM) to be held on June 28-30, 2009 in Cebu City.

The proposal to hold the Conference was developed during the strategic planning workshop for the Movement for Responsible Fisheries (MOREFISH)

The 2CCM will evaluate how well the objectives and goals of LMP Resolution No.01 Series of 1999 have been met. Also up for discusion are emerging trends in the fishery sector, such as the National Plan of Action for the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), Mindanao 2020 and Climate Change.

The 2CCM will also:

  • Review accomplishments of LGUs vis-à-vis the agreements and resolutions made during the 1st Conference of Coastal Municipalities in May 1999,
  • Share LGU best practices and lessons learned in fisheries and coastal management highlighting the issues of climate change, food security and poverty alleviation;
  • In the context of fisheries and coastal management, define the roles and responsibilities of LGUs in addressing the issues of climate change, food security and poverty alleviation;
  • Promote Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management through inter-LGU collaboration and alliances as provided for in the Local Government Code and the Fisheries Code;
  • Propose policy and sectoral reforms that will ensure sustainable fishing in municipal waters.
