MANY FISHPENS CHOKING COASTAL ECOSYSTEMS
Taking off from the fish kills that occurred
in Pangasinan several times this year, this article explains how the proliferation
of fish cages and fish pens in coastal waters is contributing to the eutrophication
-- or the virtual poisoning -- of coastal waters in the Philippines, and
to the crisis that is hitting Philippine fisheries. It explores the various
issues related both to environmental degradation and social inequity that
resulted from the uncontrolled aquaculture development.
