Conference Announcement

Sustainable Use of Estuaries and Mangroves: Challenges and Prospects

Recife - Brazil, 22-28 May 2000

First call for papers and posters

Next century, estuarine and coastal ecosystems are expected to play an
even greater role in support to both human subsistence and Nature
biodiversity. Population and investment pressures arising from the lack
of alternatives to increase food production will continue to turn
business eyes to marine ecosystems. The preservation of the features and

productivity of those environments will depend not only on research but
on the availability of information in time and scope as demanded by key
users.

The Conference will look into key areas of interest for sustaining or
enhancing productivity and functions of estuarine ecosystems. We'll also

be looking for ways to promote a better understanding of the role of
estuaries and mangroves in the food web. Another aim of the
conference will be to stimulate a debate on which parameters businessmen

should have in mind when planning partnerships with Nature.

Papers are welcome on the following subjects:

Productivity of estuarine areas
Water quality in estuaries and mangroves
Assessing functions of estuaries and mangroves
Estuarine aquaculture
Modeling bio-chemical interactions in estuarine environments
Social and political dimensions of the use of estuaries and
mangroves

One page abstracts for oral or poster presentation should be sent only
by e-mail using Word 6.0 (or above) before 15 November 1999 to

Prof. Enide Leca
Mangrove2000

Notification of paper/poster acceptation will be sent to authors by 1st

December. Full papers should be sent along with registration fees by 31
January. Received papers will be publish in book form and will be
available to Conference participants.

Detailed information on the Conference is being posted in the home page
of the event at:

The conference is being organized jointly by the Rural University of
Pernambuco, the Brazilian chapter of ISME-International Society for
Mangrove Ecosystems and the IIE-Instituto Internacional de Ecologia (Sao

Carlos, Sao Paulo).

Proposals for the organization of symposia from either thematic research

groups or institutions are welcome and will be received until 15
November. .

Recife is a typical estuarine city reclaimed from mangroves which in
many places are still preserved. Its urban design and some arquitecture
keeps the influence of the Dutch, who occupied the state in the early
17th century. Along the coast reside a number of beautiful estuaries,
surrounded by nice and warm beaches, many enclosed by strings of reefs
(or recifes, in Portuguese).

The Conference venue will be the Atlante Plaza, a newly built 5 star
hotel overlooking the natural reef pools of the Boa Viagem beach.
Special conference rates are in negotiation. For information on the
hotel: hhtp://www.atlanteplaza.com.br
