Mangroves, being tropical species, have no annual growth rings. The only way to estimate the age of mangroves is by measuring the diameter and height of the tree. Under relatively good conditions, fast-growing species like Sonneratia alba grow an average of 0.5cm in diameter and about 0.5 meter in height per year, while slow-growing species like Rhizophora apiculata grow an average of 0.2cm in diameter and 0.5 meter in height per year. Growth is affected by soil substrate, nutrients, salinity and wave energy.
